Mentawais going feral, what dos the future hold???« on: December 25 2006 14:12:00 »
Okay...my last post on this subject seemed to vanish, maybee it was a little political and not enough travel???
So....I rather go to Ments overland and similar places, stay with the locals, Island hop where needed, and get rides with the locals fishermen to the waves where needed.
It's not for everyone, not easy many hardships, and very very time consuming and without a good knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia almost impossible.
But it's cheap, you met the real locals you can dodge the crowds and your money helps the real locals, not to mention the great friends you will make and a true cultural experience.

The laws regarding Mentawai travel/tourism were drawn up some time ago, but yet to be enforced, however the Ments seem to be a floating zoo the past season.
So if the laws are going to be enforced, It could be soon.
One part of the laws could in my mind affect traveling through the area as an indepedent tourist/surfer/traveler.
I will find it and post below.
Any thoughts, will intependent travel be stoped???

Tourists and Lodging
1) The tourists visiting Mentawai Isles are obliged to stay at the lodging or home stay provided at the resort, or on a ship of the tourism company which has obtained a permit from the Local Government, or at the other lodgings which have obtained a permit from the Local Government
The way i read this is, I must stay at accomadation provided by one of the 5 tourism licence holders (surf camps) or boats run by the licence holders.
Hopefully this post wont be deleted as it is regarding TRAVEL to the Mentawais.
Will these laws be enforced?
Will I still be able to travel indendent to the area in the future?

I don't know if I understood well your post but you seem to say that a surf trip in ment without tour operator facilities is possible.
Could you give me some advices for such a trip. I plan to make a trip in Indo and this kind of travelling experience appeals me more than a tour operator one.

Like a lot that happens in indo, the laws will be inforced if they think you can be shaken-down for a bribe. Make sure you have enough $$ to cover these "expenses". This could make the trip an adventure/learning experience in itself. Good Luck

It's possible to go to mentawai for surfers/ traveler, without obliged to stay at the lodging, or the resort, or on a ship which have obtained a premit from the local goverment. You may surf with lacals guide and stay in the local area who own by lacal people. it's easy if you can speak indonesia or guiding by a good local guide. you'll meet real locals, the local culture and your money will help the local people. now I'am stay in Padang, and had many experience to guide the surfers to go to mentawai. Rick= So what your saying is these laws for overland travelers are trying to be enforced, but in normal Indo fashion a bit of cash will pay your way.
While the laws limiting boats charters are not enforced yet?

What Rick means is that laws are made in Indo to make an oportunity to make cash. If you travel there and stay with a poor local family, they are hardly going to ask the family for money ( you maybe). I have spent heaps of time on land there, it's not for the faint harted and be carefull of illness.

AGREE WITH YOU MATE,AMERICAN SURFERS ARE UNFORTUNATELY TRYING TO DICTATE TO OTHERS ABOUT WHERE THEY CAN SURF/STAY/ ETC ETC,I MEAN LOOK AT TAVARUA,WHY SHOULD PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY TO SURF THE OCEAN,IT'S FREE,AND I SHALL DISPUTE ANY ONE WHOEVER TRY'S TO CHARGE ME...WENT TO MENTAWAI'S 1 1/2 YRS AGO AND SCORED EVERYDAY,HT'S SUPPOSEDLY THE BEST IT'S BEEN,THE ONLY YANKS THERE THEN WERE KOOKS,BUT THEY WERE COOL,JUST TRYING,CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT A CAMP AT MACCAS MUST LOOK LIKE,AND THAT'S THE WORST PLACE THERE FOR MALARIA.
