Not, not really a good place to learn how to surf.
If you are learing than crowds are not a problem at Kuta and it's a lot safer and easier.

stick to the beach breaks in bali. sand is nicer to your body than coral reef. I can't think of any other beginners surf spots in indo.

Definitly wouldn't class nias as a beginners spot, but i went there in febuary with only a couple of months experience and survived, plenty scary moments but it did wonders for my confidence. And if you find it too much it almost always reforms inside making nice waist high rides. Just bring booties!

Thanks all for the advice. Dont think I can survive nias...
Will fall back to the plan in bali then.

Should have mentioned theres heaps of spots in west java, reefs, point breaks and beachies, only locals and a few indos on weekend trips surfing there. As long as you arent interested in nightlife its perfect.. Beach at kuta is horrible, don't give up!

yeah, Plebuhan ratu has a good beginner spot, i think they call it pussys. A place where there rent form boards. Fun spot with only a few kid surfers.
