where to surf/live in Indo for 10 months« on: May 25 2007 15:05:00 »
I am a Canadian and my boyfriend and I will be traveling to Indo for 10 months in October 2007. I have surfed a few times in Tofino ( vancouver island, canada) and my boyfriend has never surfed. We are looking to find a place to live/ surf for 10 months where there are enough breaks varying in skill requirment as we improve. We will be living in hawaii for 3 months prior to leaving surfing approx every 2 days so we will have that skill base. Neither of us are into the party scene and we will likely not have a vehicle so close breaks would be great. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Also does anyone have any expereince finding long term accomidation in Indo?

You can only get 30 VOA=Visa On Arrival.
You'll have to fly to Singapore or Malaysia every 29 days and come back.

60 day visa caan be had if appylying at a local Indo consulate before you leave, but still have to be renewed every 60 days outside of Indo. 6 mo. business and cultural visas are available for thoes that qualify. I think the cultural needs local to vouch for you.

I know two people through a friend who went to University with me here. I don't have any contact with them still but my friend does. They live in East Kalimantan and i've heard that that's not a particularly desirible area to visit so i don't think i'll end up in that area. Thanks for your sincere concern though Jose, it is much appreciated.

Hey guys thanks for your responses. We've changed our flight from hawaii to Beginning of Sept instead of October. We are going to stay in Kuta first. How long would you recomend we stay there? Where would be a good second step from there?. We were also looking to learn the culture and language near the end of the trip would sumatra be an option?. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers,

first things first if you like to explore indonesia surfing cheapest places to stay is at pangandaran beah west java, you can a double room for IDR,50.000 with breakfast.
in java there is 5 surf spot that you must visit but one to the others is far enough, surf trip in indonesia like i have been thru is much more like an adventure.

Yo Christina, I am in a very similiar position, I am Canadian, from Canmore but I have lived in Tofino the last few years but I am in Sweden right now with my girlfriend. We are heading to Indo in December for at least a few months to surf, she has never surfed so we also need a place with good reef for me and some begginner beachies for her. If you could pass any info along to me I would love you forever!
I have met a lot of people in Tofino, I used to work at the "Dirty" Maquinna, but if you guys are not into the party scene I am sure you wouldnt remember me =)
But for real any info you could send along would be much appreciated!
