safety and advice around kuta« on: August 24 2007 05:08:00 »
Given that there are travel alerts for all of Indonesia, can someone describe safety in and around Kuta for a single girl travelling alone for a month of surfing. Also worried about sharks, but heard that most recent sightings are around the penisula area (not around Kuta/Legian/Seminak). Already part of a local surf camp for the first 2 wks, which hopefully will also be a safe way of spending the initial time. Just wondering about things to be careful about. Thanks

the 2005 bombings,i thinks if things were to go down it would probley happin in kuta, the balinese people are not very stoked on the baombing messing with tourisim
kuta is like the tijuana of indonesia its alright for a party or cause ya gotta fly into it,but i get sick of the vendors
and cops always trying to get a buck of ya.id try to find a spot outside of kuta, like the bukit ,and go to kuta on motorbike when you have to,

Hi, I'm a single woman, have spend 5 months in the past 18 surfing Bali alone. Yes, you should worry about sharks but of the two-legged, good-looking variety - i.e. Javanese & Sumatran men wanting to be your boyfriend and get rich! Beware. They can be extremely charming. Otherwise I never encountered any dangers apart from dodgy roads out of town cruising on my motorbike. And the filthy ocean in Kuta during the wet season. You will love it, it's a beautiful place of friendly people and luscious nature - enjoy!

don't take this guys advice and go to/from kuta on bikes. the cops are bastards and will take money from you everytime. stay at thomas homestay between ulu an padang and if you fell the need to party in kuta get a taxi
