Rip Curl Search at Uluwatu Surfing Indonesia

What do you think about the Rip Curl Search being held at Uuwatu or Padang from july 28-Aug10 2008?
Can it still be called "the search" with any credibility?
Are Rip Curl crapping on surfers who have planned their holiday during this time but will  not be able to surf Ulus because of the contest?

I think that it will be a great contest, because of the quality of the wave. I do agree with you that people that planned their holiday in that period are a bit f****ed because they will not be able to surf there.

However there are some descent alternatives in the area.

I'm one of the poor souls who's annual indo trip has been slightly crapped on by the new comp location...  thankfully though I'm only there for the last 3 days of the waiting period, and given how consistent ulus is at this time of year I'm confident the comp will be over by the time I land...  but there's about 5 weeks before the next WCT comp, so you can be sure that a lot of the pros and their hoes will be sticking around afterwards!  prepare for mad overcrowding at all the bali faves arggh.  fk that I'm getting on the first boat i can find!

The rip curl search 2008 event was meant to be held at a 'secret location' in Western Australia but the locals told rip curl to search elsewhere, if you want to tell these guys go f**k off , its quite simple..
As far as staging it at ulu's.. the search is over !!

Great point steve, rip curl has absolutely no credibility at all calling ulu's..

Maybe rip curl get more mileage with the rupia, these cheap bastards will probably hold it in china next year, then they can go keep an eye on there boardies getting made..

It might piss a few people off, especially with so many pro's hitting all the line ups, but watching the worlds best surfers attacking freight training ulus or padang.. its gonna make sick viewing.. but agree pretty lame search

I can think of a spot not far from Bali that is secluded and puts ulu's and padang to shame, a bit fickle yes but if they got it good it would make a spectacle.contests don't do much for me actually.just make the waves more crowded.

won't be able to surf ulu's (or bukit) that entire time.  we'll be over there for my HONEYMOON the entire waiting period.  We arrive in bali the day before the waiting period starts and leave 2 days after it ends.  We reserved a bungalow at Bingin, which i have cancelled in favor of accomodations far away from the contest mess.  If it weren't for the rumors in the Magazines about it, I wouldn't even have known.  I can't believe that rip curl is doing this to all the surfers.
we'll be "searching" elsewhere in west bali the entire vacation instead.  shame on you, rip curl, for screwing the pooch...  I really hope that nothing bad happens at uluwatu... fingers crossed for the island of the gods...  much love to everyone.

not a real search ...sumatra sumba west jawa full of spot
