Cheap Indo 3 months

« on: May 17 2009 11:05:00 »

I'm trying to go to Indo this summer/fall for 3 months of surfing and not working ... how cheap can one really go?  I am starting in Bali but would like to make it to Mentawais eventually, is there a CHEAP way to surf the Mentawais?

Hey i'm heading out next month until september....going from Bali, over to West Java and then Sumatra....You can get over to the Ments pretty cheaply by boat and land, but it takes a lot of time and hardship and some knowledge of indonesian language is really needed.....i've budgeted for £350 a month give or take, which from past experience is quite doable.....Send me a message if your interested in hitting java/sumatra though as someone to split the costs with would be pretty good...

My experience and discussions w/ others
- Budget $1000/month. You can do it for less, $400-500 if you really know your way arround in Kuta, but it will rather Spatan. Best to have a reserve. You'll want some beer money.
-Traveling to Java and Sumatra can eat-up lots of time and $$. A 10 day boat trip could cost as much as the whole 3 months.
- You'll need to carry cash when traveling outside the main tourist areas.
- Over 2 months and you do something about your visa.

What did you decied about accomodations upon arrival?

Hey Rick

Not sure which one of us your sending a message to there....anyway i've already got my Visa sorted, i know Bali pretty well so just going to rock up to one of the places on poppies when i arrive....apart from the flight to Jakarta from bali and the flight from Jakarta to Lampung, i'm doing the trip completely overland...I'm ok at speaking indonesian, so hopefully shouldn't have too many problems....From past experience i just find accomodation when i arrive, there's always somewhere cheap available....

Hi There,

I have been to Lhoknga Aceh Province, where the tsunami 2004 hit that place. Lhoknga is good place for surfing and relaxing, I have been there for 4 months last year and stayed with Eddie's Homestay, it cost $5 per night. He can speak well English, if you are interested to go there just called him by +62 811688682 and +62 81360319126 or you can email him by ediquenzalo@yahoo.com and decolunga@yahoo.com.

Have a good travelling

There are cheap ways...but the spots are far apart thus you will need a boat...or a surf camp...cheap is not the way to do the Mentawais...Get on a boat and pay the $$ you wont regret it...
