Mentawais Surf Charters« on: December 11 2009 17:12:00 »
Interested in doing a surf boat charter to the Mentawais this coming year. Before I put down my hard earned cash, I'd like to hear from surfers that have done this trip and what boat or charter operation you recommend or more importantly don't recommend. I consider it a must that the captain/crew surf as to elimiate conflict of interests. What month would you recommend (May/June/July/Aug)? What can I expect as far as crowds? Let me hear about your experience. Thanks.

Depends on a lot of things....
your budget, care factor on luxury level, speed of boat and waves, many charters will do the milk run playgrounds, telescopes area ht's maccas, thunders and then back home via HT's or if time allows back to playgrounds....
while some charters will go where they know they will get best waves with least crowds (avoid other boats doing the milk run) i reakon a good boat should take you all the way down to the hole area if conditions are right.
Personally I reakon stay away from the companys who own multiple boats and stick with the owner/surfer charter.

yeah most boats have a surf guide or two who surf, and msany captains do also.
time of year..is all about april to october equal swell with crowds..while the rest of the year is generally less crowded and generally less swell..its a gamble it could be pumping but it could be flat or tiny for a week.

I've asked the same question in another forum. Someone told me that a charter boat called the "Irish Mist" is a good choice. Apparently the captain is a freak but has really good local knowledge. Me and my surf buddies booked the Irish Mist for a surf trip over http://www.lineupexplorers.com . It's a great agency. I was totally enthused from my last trip to Costa Rica.
