First, it depends on where you will be staying, how ,much you will be traveling. I've gotten the idea that costs have gone up significantlly in the last few years, particularlly in Bali. There is cheap, and then there is REALLY CHEAP.
I'll suggest $800us/month. And remember, outside the major cities/tourist areas you'll need to carry cash. You'll want a emergency fund back home.

Yeah depends heaps where you stay and the lifestyle you live, live like a local rent a place outside of a tourist area in walking distance of waves, and you could do it real cheap.
Live in a tourist area like bali, party and travel to waves and you will chew through money fast..
Dont forget you will also need to leave the country to renew your tourist or social visa.

Bali is a cheap place but the money still seems to go fast enough when you are there for two months or longer. Ofcourse, I eat out a lot.
Otherwise, I only pay $1/day for my motorbike but I have a good connection. My losman (guesthouse) costs $5/day right near Uluwatu.
And then ofcourse, there's the matter of the monthy visa renewal. That's $175 minimum if you don't want to bother traveling out of Indonesia. You need to make a good contact at the airport immigration office.

I rent a house in jimbaran for $800 a year and i probably spend around $200 a month on food and $40 a month on a bike so it can be done cheaply! best think to do is figure it out when u get here and get to know the locals u can trust.
You will need a sponsor from Indonesia if you want a social visa...

if you can live like a local (eating the local food, basic room, etc) not like a tourist, with USD 400 is more than enough to live in Cimaja, West Java. that's for food, accomodation, transport.
