You can drink in Sumatra. Have been to south Sumatra and Nias.
Bintang is for sale!

You can drink and buy alcohol in Sumatra...but
Bintang and some other beer almost everywhere, places like Krui/south sumatra,Nias, Padang, you can even get warm at supemarkets...spirits are harder to find and expensive, night life not much to none, all the surf camps/resorts sell bintang and some sell spirits.
However in Aceh, that includes Simeulue Island and Banyaks Alcohol is often very very hard to find, dont think illegal, but not far of, and drunkeness frowned on and you could get yourself in a lot of trouble very easily.
If you want to Party head to Bali and Jakarta, Jakarta nightlife is crazy.

Alcohol is widely available in sumatra. Supermarkets sell it even. Agree with above comment, spirits are just too expensive for it to be worthwhile, they obviously don't want it around. Beer on the other hand is tolerated but running around local villages openly drinking or drunk is not cool.
Save all that for crazy places like jakarta or bali. Respect the enviroment your in & you"ll get to enjoy real indonesian culture, & be able to remember it.
