Bali surfing recommendations but suitable for non-surfing wi

« on: February 21 2011 13:02:00 »

I want to head to Indonesia at the beginning of April for 10-14 days with my wife. I am a beginner surfer but want to surf everyday and therefore would really appreciate some advice. My wife doesn't surf so need to be in a good area that's not solely designed for surfers otherwise I'll be in trouble...any thoughts would be great.
Many thanks
Will

Well, beginner beach. 3 choices :
Balangan, but your wife will get crazy as it's in the middle of nowhere.
Dreamland : same
So that leaves us Kuta and Seminyak.
She can shop, you can surf.
I suggest you stay in Seminyak or Kuta in a nice hotel with swimming pool for a while and arrange a short stay in Balangan to escape the crowd and relax.
And if you want to make sure she is really happy, go for 2,3 days in Gili islands, she gonna love it. (but not you, no surf)
If you're a beginner, avoid the famous spots...

There's a great hotel in Kuta called the Bali Sandy where you can negotiate price.  Would be prefect for two weeks.  Has a nice pool in the lush courtyard and massage therapist.  Is close to beach too.  You could always make a day trip to Ubud where Mic Jagger married Jerry Hall in a hindu ceremony.  Two of the Bali's best bartenders Rico and Jeffrey work at Poppies Restaurant on Poppies Gang I.

I would check out uluwatu and padang padang over dreamland.  I don't know Baliyan so well.  I wouldn't say Dreamland is for beginners.  Maybe I was there on big days which is most days.  Two very awesome breaks.

Well, I am not a beginenr anymore but being 40 makes me a little less competitive.
Bingin : I stay 2 hours in a water with 20 other guys, I did not catch anything. All the so called heroes want to ride that wave. Great souvenir.
Uluwatu, going in and going out is a bit scary.
Yes I never had Dreamland higher than 1 meter, and with that size, it's pretty ok.

Bigin is a tough spot.  I don't think I have ever caught a waves there.  If you do catch a wave there and stay on too long you risk injury on the reef.

I have lived right above Bigin on top of the cliff next to Mu.
