feralling it mentawai« on: April 04 2011 22:04:00 »
I am planning on a month in the mentawais around May/June and cannot afford boats or resorts so that leaves feralling it. Can anyone tell me if it is still ok to do this? and recommend a good village where i can walk to waves or catch cheap boats.
I am aware of the malaria risks and need for bahasa indonesia. My indonesian is quite good and i have traveled through a lot of indo without too much trouble. Please email if you want to keep stuff quiet (i would prefer this too).
I will be travelling solo so anyone looking to do the same please contact me and use my indo skills, so i can have someone to travel with, which makes it easier for all involved.

Look through the old post, or in Lonely planet Indonesia, theres not as many options as you would expect, and locals rip you off, for what you get, normally a smoky wooden hut, police have also been known to do regular raids, as it is illegal if they not have licence to accomadate paying guest, some places you must take all food and water...
Boats to get around are a must and also expensive compared to other places in Indo...why not sure, fuels not that expensive, i think its because they know how much the charter boats and resorts charge, lot of hassle to surf mostly crowded waves but yeah still a hell of a lot cheaper than a charter boat or resort.
