Closest surf to Dublin?

« on: September 22 2005 07:09:00 »

Hello All,
Two Belfast fellas living in Dublin for the year still travelling every weekend to the North Coast where we know it's sweet. Any alternatives? Seen a couple of listings on the east coast, is it possible to get into the irish sea without growing a third arm? Where do most dubs go? Wanna come with? Have corsa will travel!
Cheers Connor

If you head out the N11 (Wexford Road) from Dublin (Head for Donnybrook and keep going or go southbound on the Motorway) and keep going till you see signs for Brittas Bay, head for the coast road and keep your eyes peeled, there's a few spots dotted around Brittas Bay, little over an hour from the city. It's usually small but you get a few nice breaks there, your suit will smell like a sewer afterwards but you won't grow a new limb or anything. Other than that it's the three hour drive to the west coast, Sligo, Lahinch etc, better surf, nicer smell! good luck.

there is a decetn surf spot just past brittas bay, called mahermore. its a private beach and is not sign posted or advertised, but ask around and you'll be pointed in the right direction.

when it kicks off its pretty good.

and whoever said you'll smell like a sewer is talking through his a*se. water is perfectly clean and is a blue flag beach.

That's the only other catch around there, no one has a sense of humour. It's all the sewer water......lovely and clean.

Irish Sea is FILTHY!! I get some sort of ear ache or sinus infection every time I went down to Wicklow to surf – so I stopped going! Would recommend heading West.  Maghermore is NOT a blue flag beach, never has been and never will be!  Has a filthy little stream flowing into it, probably local sewage!  Check out Killiney beach.

Exactimondo! It definetly ain't blue flag but such risks are part of surfing the East Coast. Enjoy! kind of!
