surfing in Japan in January 2015?« on: December 16 2014 15:12:00 »
Hi! Would someone recommend some good surfing place in Japan for January for a beginner? I guess it is some Miyazaki or Kogashima where is warm enough?
I've surfed for about two month, but I'm not very good. Though I love surfing!!! Any hints please? Of a place where I could also hire a board and take some classes maybe.

Hi, yeah Miyazaki or Kagoshima could be okay, but I'd recommend to go even further south. Miyazaki and Kagoshima can be as cold as 8 to 9 celsius in January, while main Okinawa island remains 17 to 18 celsius. One thing to note about Okinawa main island is that almost all the breaks there are reef breaks, and that you can surf only for 2 hours or so per day, only during high tides to avoid being hit by reefs.
About renting and lesson place... to make sure that the place you visit speaks English, google "Okinawa+surf" in English a bit. Otherwise I can tell a few places but they may not speak English to support you well during your visit.
Hope you enjoy your visit to Japan for surf!
