Surfing Miyazaki / Kagoshima & rental board prospects« on: August 05 2006 05:08:00 »
I will be in Kagoshima on business in early Sept, and want to go surfing on the weekend while there. My understanding is that Miyazaki will offer the best options for waves (prefer rights), but my question is this: is it common for surf shops to rent surfboards, particularly of a larger size? If I knew I could rent a decent 6'9" to 7' board, I would not go through the hassle of bringing a board from home all the way there and back. If anyone can provide a web link or contact for renting a decent, larger board in Miyazaki, it would be greatly appreciated. And of course, if there are any suggestions on surf spots, I'd love to hear about them.

We are going to Japan in December. I surfed Miyazaki years ago, the beach break was a nice placid 2 -3 feet, short boards are fine. Water will be chilly in December. We hired a board there then, should be still ok.

Yup, there are plenty of beachies where mals are popular (e.g. Aoshima nr. Miyazaki City or Okuragehama nr. Hyuga), but there are plenty of v good shortboard waves too. Try south of Miyazaki City for spots like Uchiumi (fast left over shallow rock), Kobukei (l and r over round boulders) and Oura (l point over round boulders), beaches try Ibiihama, Public and Umegehama (just N of Nichinan-shi). As for board hire, well, it wasn't v common when I lived there, but you can try New Wave just off the 220 highway going down to Kisakihama from Miyazaki City or Umi Surf (also on 220, but in Miyazaki City near the Daiei shopping mall of Miyako City and Miyazaki-minani Station). They are probably your best bets. O tanoshimi ni! (Have fun!)

Going down to Miyazaki for the weekend. Beginner surfer looking for a good beach break for some fun.
Any suggestions on where to get a board for a couple of days?
