Hey Kyle,
i surfed Aoshima Beach (about 20 mins sth of Miyazaki city) in September last year. I took a train down from Beppu and there was no hassle about boards on trains. The waves were pretty consistent but small but the locals were saying I missed a typhoon swell by a few days. I passed alot of areas with potential between about Kameoka? and Miyazaki on the way down. There was a surf camping area (Kawaminami) about 30mins nth of Miyazaki, but not surprisingly, it closed at the end of August so i couldnt stay there. i stayed at a car-camping area about 30mins walk (15mins by bus) sth of Aoshima so i did it on the cheap (1000 yen/night) but i wish i had a car because there was a lot of potential further down the coast.
