Surfing around Yokohama Tokyo

Dear all,

I am a German who is going to live the next two years around or in Yokohama...
As I surfed for more then one year the New Jersey shore I do like to continue with that great sport..actually that was one of the reasons moving to Yokohama. I read most of the posts in this forum but still I do like to ask again if a car is absolutely necessary going to the beach from the above mentioned cities, because it looks not far.
So if there are some friendly surfers with cars I do like to ask if they can give me some lift or at least advice how to get to the beach. Furthermore would it be interesting to find an English  surf report for that region - are there any?
How is it with the stuff - expensive and bring your own or cheap (I donĀ“t think so) and buy it better there.

Pls let me know all your thoughts....have fun out there

RE: Surfing around Yokohama Tokyo

Hello,

I live in east Tokyo(Kokubunji) and go surfing every weekend to Chiba prefecture.  If there's anything you want to know about surf and access to Chiba, contact me.  Basically surfing in Chiba needs a car (drive about 1.5hr to 3hr depending on the area you go)....

I'm very sorry for the late reply.
You can take train & bus to Chiba beaches but finding good spot of the day is very tough, because there are many many beach breaks along the coast and few reef breaks.
I think closest access from train station to beach is Onjuku but usually this beach has a small break.  Go to Ichinomiya area for most frequent break.  (get off at Ichinomiya station and take a bus to the Ichinomiya beach)

Hey

I am still living in Yokohama and  I agree to the above opinions....you need a car...forget the train and bus shit.
If a Typhoon swell hits Japan from the south, go to the shonan area south of yokohama (you might take the train to kamakura + some small train further along the coast). Otherwise Chiba or ibaraki is the place to go. Try to get some japanese friends...they quite friendly and like to take you to the beach.
