Tokyo Surf Escape Suggestions?

« on: May 20 2009 15:05:00 »

I will be in Tokyo the week of May 25-30, and would like to spend two nights away from the city where I can surf. My plan is to leave the city on the morning of May 28 and return to catch my departing flight on the evening of May 30.

Can anyone recommend a good destination where I can rent a board and find a decent room at a reasonable rate?

Yo bro, nearby the big T, then Enoshima near Shonan in Kanagawa prefecture- the waves are pretty low, but the water is warmer since the current comes from the south
.If you are prepared to travel, then Chiba is best.Train-take the Yokosuka-line (dark blue) to Chiba city from Tokyo station (takes about 40mins), and then grab a bus to Kujukuri, Shirasato, etc. from Bus stop No. 4 at Chiba station (direction: Kujukuri sunrise). The waves are bigger in both Kujukuri and Shirasato than in Shonan (plus the sea is a lot less crowded!); however, you'll need a 3mm wetsuit just in case the water is still fresh in May (since the current comes from the North Pacific and the weather recently has been very unpredictable at best).

If you can get your hands on a car, then I recommend Hebara, Chiba or Ichinomiya, Chiba as the waves are better and the scene is more exciting than Kujukuri, Shirasato...and about 100 times better than Shonan (which is really just a mediocre alternative to just about anywhere in Chiba prefecture).

Both Hebara and Ichinomiya attract more experienced surfers and boarders. Best time is early a.m. (as you probably know).
