Lohis June 2010... Crowds/Guide?« on: February 24 2010 06:02:00 »
I grew up soul surfing Florida on my 7'2" - 7'4" sticks. I have just returned to THE LIFE 3 years ago surfing my same old board sizes. I surf a couple of months a year (intermediate). I recently purchased my first short boards 6'6" and 6'3" and I pray for surf before then to get some practice in. I also plan to get some great walls at Lohis to practice cutbacks and other manuvers.
Will there be a ton of people in mid-June (not just Lohis, I plan to take the boats to some of the other spots.)
With June at he start of surf season, will there be a guide to talk to about tides, currents, and which breaks working with the swell the week I'm there?
Never surfed a reef before so I'm excited... and nervous as well. Don't want to get drilled by coral on my honeymoon!

Possible crowds in June... that is the best surf. where are you staying...? Assuming no boat since its your honeymoon. Boats can pull up and fill up the breaks and it can get crowded.
Depending on the resort you go to, there may be a guide employed by the resort to help you out. if not, you can always check our site justsurfmaldives.com. we will be posting our opinions of swell, tides, etc. You probably are not looking for what Just Surf offers as far as daily trips, but will be glad to pass on any info we have.
good luck and congrats on the wedding thing.

Peak season for surf is in June, July and August. Lots of surfers in June and lots of Brazillians at Lohis who drop in, paddle on your inside and have absolutely no surf etiquette at all. Surf Lohis in the morning as most people will catch the boats in the morning and then you catch the afternoon boat as most people will already be surfed out. Cokes usually has less people especially Brazilians because it is a more powerful wave then the other spots in the region. You can surf all the surf breaks at any tide and you don't have to worry too much about the reefs except for Cokes as it is a little shallower and more powerful wave. It can get nice and hollow and you will get tubed if your willing to go for it. Hope that helps.

JustSurf... Thanks for the information. We will be at Lohis. Will they have a pro on the island?
You are right, honeymoon isn't best for boat trip, but it seems amazing. I look forward to reading up on the surf as June approaches. I'm completely stoked.

Santos.... Great tips in your post! I will take your advice and heed your warnings...
As for Cokes... what is "shallow"? 2'... 4'...? Just curious. I definitely have to try it! i can't fly around the world and pass up that opportunity.
