Go North to a little town called Sayulita, google it in for surf reports. I tried posting this three times, I guess because I tried to put that URL up.
Anyway, also further a bit North, Playa San Francisco.
Watch out for Hurricanes.

Are there any busses from Vallarta to Sayulita? Are there any surf shops to rent a board? I am travelling with a student group and can not bring my board.
I will be there in late June. Any chance of hooking up with some gringos to surf with. Send me an email: firstname.lastname@example.org

Yes, buses run to Sayulita, that's how we got there 25 years ago. I know it's changed, just like everything, but, google it in and follow the links, you're sure to find some connections.

From the airport, you just cross the bridge and you can catch a bus north to Sayulita. They run every hour or so. There are several places you can rent boards right on the beach. Its about $15 a day.
