Surf in Michoacan this May, June« on: March 14 2007 19:03:00 »
Anyone heading down around this time and interested in renting a car to find some sweet spots? I speak fluent Spanish and consider myself to be an intermediately skilled surfer. Also pretty travel savy and know went to discard hearsay. Apparently the whole world of surfers wants me to believe that if I go down to Michoacan looking for epic surf, all I will find is polluted, dangerous beaches.
Lets go have some fun!

Hi there, if you go to Michoacan, have to go to "La Ticla" and "Rio Nexpa - or - Nexpa" pretty nices spots, the best in the area, and if you rent a car, i reccomend to drive south in Guerrero state, "el Rancho" near Zihuatanejo, then still travelling south to, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo "Escolleras", "Playa Linda", and if there's a nice swell go to "las gatas" <<An island, so drive south and go to "la barrita "papanoa" and hundreds more beaches between La Ticla and Acapulco., i live here, so any info, i can help you, -
regards and good waves.

Gday Jason. Sounds, like a good plan. I heading over to mexico in May, from New Zealand. Am doing a similar thing, planning on buying a car, and doing some touring round for about 5 months. Am keen to hit up the beaches and explore for some sweet spots also. Am intially off to Nayarit state for a few weeks and have to met up with some friends at the end of may for a couple of weeks, then also June. But otherwise, pretty flexible to do whatever, so would be cool to met up with someone keen to hunt out some surf spots and explore the coast.

I have surfed this area before. Initially I was dissappointed because I have found better waves in Costa Rica. However there are good waves in this area with minor to no crowds to deal with. The problem is the spots are difficult to find and you will need a car. Off hand I recommend La Ticla, Rio Nexpa, and La Saladida. Most of the waves are left points and with some local knowledge you amy find secret spots in this area too. Good Luck!!! -RM

I'll be there from the 22nd of this month until the third of May - if you're there then, send me an email. I'm planning on doing it cheaply, I've heard there are palapas right on the beach at Nexpa, La Ticla, and Pascuales . . . a car would be nice though for some exploring.

If you are in the area another good spot is San Juan de Alima about 30 minutes north of Ticla. I surfed there last summer. If you like surfing empty beachbreak then check it out! Access is easy (directly of highway). Picks up fair amount of swell. Beautiful scenery!
