How safe is it to drive and camp in mexico

« on: August 02 2008 18:08:00 »

We are an Aussie couple about to buy a van and drive down through mexico and further into central america.  We are wondering how safe it is to drive and camp.  Are the police a hassel and is it ok to camp at the surf breaks or are we better off getting hostel rooms?

And advice would be great as we are going into this with out any info or advice

Its very safe, well depending on the part of country you are in. Ive driven through mexico from Texas down to Michoacan and had no problems. Just dont drive at night, we did and it was hella sketchy. Dont carry any you know what with you to, as the policia will bust you. Generally, if you get pulled over, tell the cop "where do I pay this ticket? I pay you or the judge?" and you'll almost always get "pay me" answer. Me and some buds are driving through mex, down to costa rica, and back to texas mid august - mid october. Hit me up if you need any more info, I love hangin with Aussies.
