I went in November last year and it was one big bathtub. Beautiful - but flat. I think you're taking your chances, but could get lucky - you should get something in 3 weeks. If I go again it will be Jan/Feb. I saw the possibilities of the point breaks and it made me sick to get no waves.
I would not hire a car at the airport - too expensive compared to the deals you can strike with the smaller guys in Town - the problem then I guess is getting into town.
