Portugal versus Morocco in February« on: November 25 2010 03:11:00 »
I'm trying to decide whether or not to begin my travels in France in mid-February and then surf my way down through Spain and Portugal, and then hit up Morocco in mid to late-March. Or do it in reverse, beginning in Morocco in mid-Feb and ending up in Hossegor in mid-April.
Any advice, what is the surf like in Portugal in late-Feb? what about board hire? whats the go with transport, should I hire a car or will the bus/train system be enough? I'll be moving on to central europe afterward so I'm that keen on dragging my boards all over Europe with me once I'm done surfing!

I forgot to ask!
What is it like in Morocco towards the end of March? I've heard mixed reports that the swell can be fickle as it gets closer to spring. Do you think it would be more worth my while starting in Morocco?

Definitly second option, start from the South and finish in the North.
Portugal late february is great.
About transport, no need for a car, you can use bus, ferry, train.
And about surfboard rental, check www.rentasurfboard.com, they have centers all along your trip.

I recommend you to start in Marocco in Feb (its warmmer and its the best season there and then come come up to Portugal, spain...)
In Portugal Penhiche and Ericeira are the best places to visit. In Peniche(the best waves are lefts "Supertubes" "Lagide" and in Ericeira the best waves are rights (Coxos and Ribeira D'ilhas). Both pick up the same swell and have great spots too surf and lots of places to stay (its winter time so no problem to find places to stay).
You will find some surfshops and surfschools to rent material in Ericeira and Peniche, but I recomend you this site http://www.surfboardrentals.com.pt where you can book your material in advance so you will know that you will have the right surfboard available and waiting for you.
HAVE A NICE TRIP...
