New Zealand is good but relaly cold. Has good uncrowded waves and has lots of stree free places.
If i was you i would go to fiji. Far warmer, more relaxed, cheaper, and better waves.

I lived for a year in Auckland and have to say, it's a great place! The nature kicks ass, the people are friendly and relaxed, the labour market in Auckland is quite hot etc etc. I almost always surfed in Piha which is a Beautiful beach in the rain forest 45 mins from Auckland. There are others that are totally crowd-free close by and there where ALWAYS waves there, 3ft or bigger. One major drawback though for me with a really fair skin is the buuuurning sun. My face tomato-red, and my eyes soar from dec to march (NZ summer), but it was worth it! But if you're reasonably dark-skinned that's not an issue.
