Best Surf within easy reach from Hamilton

I am coming to NZ next Friday and I am hoping to get some good waves while I am there. I will be based in Hamilton and am wondering about the best breaks that are easily within reach, bearing in mind my transport may only be by public transport! Also as an extra, if there is one beach to surf in NZ which one would you recommend? Lastly, are sharks a problem? Cheers all!
