Surfing New Zeland,when is the best time of the year????

Hi,

I would like to go surfing to New Zeland but dont know really when is the best time of the year? when is the swell bigger and more consistent?

If it's size you want Alexis, come here in winter - i.e. right now. Pack a 4/3 suit and booties.

January through to May. Both coasts of the North Island are consistantly good

Ive surfed here for 20 years.  It totally depends on the place and the year, but the most reliable spots are pretty easy to pick.  I agree with the other post, late summer through early winter North Island pumps both coasts.  The beauty of this country is you can suss out a new weather system and rock up to where it is hitting best.  
Winter in Raglan is a good base.  Come late summer, get a car and mobile internet connection, check the surf websites, be prepared to move around and you will surf quality every single day.  Water temps dive from 20+ to 17 or cooler so bring rubber for the cool down.
