Moving to NZ...new

Heyyy...my family are considering and more than likely moving to NZ next year...where are the best spots to  surf for a beginner?
ive tried it once before. has to be a good way to make new friends too yes?

the coromandel of course whanga bar best wave in nz, pawis, tairua hotty, and sailors grave watch out 4 those bigg ass rocks best place to learn not far from the {mount. i learnt in waihi beach}   <- bay of plenty. no one around to laugh at you some sick glassy material hassle those lifeguards allways cutting up my waves.goodluck no surf around head to hotty or sailors

whangarei is a good place but if you come from a big city you might think it's a bit small...more decent surf then wellywood...
