Visiting student - Better surf, Dunedin or Christchurch??

« on: March 12 2008 22:03:00 »

I will be studying abroad in New Zealand next fall.  I'm either going to U of Otago or U of Canterbury.  Which place has better surf, less crowds, less sharks?

Otago has better surf. dominant wind is offshore exposed to more swell directions. Don't worry about sharks or crowds its not an issue. more people in the water the less likely you'll be eaten.

Christchurch if you want to drive miles to get below average waves ,coz pegasus bay is always flat. Dunnos if you you want more consistent swell and variety ,she gets cold though.

damn, I just got accepted to U Canterbury.  I hear Sumner gets decent though (Taylor's Mistake?) and I'm looking for other nearby areas that I can hit on weekends and or Fridays.

Taylors is over-rated. Check out www.talorssurf.co.nz theres no one out 90% of the year. Least you'll get some study done.
