Well....depends where you're headed for one.....North or South island or both?! Bare in mind too that its Winter at the moment (and when you arrive) so up in the far north you may not notice a huge difference but waaaay down south you'll need plenty of rubber. Personally I enjoy Winter alot because crowds are practically non-existant (not that they really are existant anyway) and also the swells are that much bigger and deeeper. Do some research dude. Do your friends surf during the Winter?

Cruisin from Oregon in August and looking for a good time. Already completed a sick winter of skiing so I'd love to get some nice swell. And being from Oregon I'm not against putting on a 6 mill. I have all of august open and just trying to figure out if New zealands winter surf is like Oregon's winter surf. ie.. very stormy at times, to big to surf most of the time. I love big waves but only a few spots up here can handle anything over 10 feet. But seeing that nz is made up of some reefs I am sure that they can hold waves better. Anyways i will be on the North Island and looking surf with my freinds in August. Love some info of where to go and what to do. I'd do the same for you up here in Oregon!!

I went for a swim in Oregon a few years back in high summer (i think it was 90F ) it was the coldest water ive ever been in, it hurt my bones. There is never anything like this in NZ.
For lineup info surf2surf.com have published a book which is definitive for a traveller. The days are quite short in winter, meybe 12-13 hours of light but you can still be powderhound in the am and pulling in in the arvo.
