Best city for surfing in NZ?« on: February 07 2009 13:02:00 »
What's the best city in NZ to live in if you're a surfer? I'll be studying there next year and want some opinion on where it's best - is Auckland any good?

auckland is not to bad you have to do a bit of traveling 45 mins to piha on the west coast and just over an hour to te Arai on the east coast are your best bets

Dunedin is by far the best city for surfing in NZ. Ive lived in Auck, CHCH, Welli and Dunners and can safely say Dunners kicks anywhere elses ass. To have breaks like Aramoana, Pinnacles, Blackhead and even St Clair within minutes of the city...it just rocks. St Kilda has been spitting since the sh%t pipe pier has been there too. Wish I was back there.

Taupo gets swell from all directions and is always offshore somewhere. Has hundreds of bays and point breaks.

New Plymouth is by far the best, off the beaten path, and a ton of amazing beaches, points, and reefs all along the coast line.. New plymouth is a sick little town with great people, theres a huge volcano/national park right behind the town, and its absolutly beautiful.. lived there for 4 months bartending and surfing and can safely say it was the best life i ever had.... ha... if you buy an old van with a bed then new plymouth is the spot, can camp right at the breaks, not a ton of tourists, jsut surfers, raglan only a few hours drive to the north...

Yeah you're gonna need a decent wetty, booties and a hat for winter in the south island. summers still wetsuits, pretty rare you get out in your boardies in the south.
Dunedins the place I reckon, cool city, a lot of good breaks, not far to the catlins … cant go wrong with the naki either tho, if you want a smaller town to live in, NP aint too bad
