go to dunedin if you can handle the cold. Constant pumping surf down here n way less crowds then up north.

Depends what time of year your placement is -best time is Feb thru April -the weather and water are warm and you get swell. Best city at that time would be a toss up between New Plymouth, Gisborne and Dunedin -all have lots of good waves close to town. Forget Wellington, (inconsistent, windy/cold, too much driving) Auckland (mostly) all beachbreak,crowds, too much driving) Christchurch (inconsistent, cold, too much driving) Any other time of the year than those months you are dealing with cold water and weather etc. Not a problem if you are used to it but if you've got the option you'd be wise to use it.
