Surf a good standard wondering what the surf is like AUG/SEP

I surf a good standard, I live in europe and my fisrt time to NZ.
I'm flying into Chrischurch in Aug/Sept and hiring a camper any good ideas on cheap campers and any tips on places to surf when i am there.

An East Coast town north of Christchurch called Kaikoura would be the best in that area. Very cold though, but has two good point breaks and a couple of other spots.
