Plenty of great surf in NZ, where I'm from. But Mount Maunganui is one of the worst spots in the whole country for waves. Nice beach, but crap surf...

Check out my gallery of surf images from around New Zealand for some inspiration, here:

Holy Smokes Joz!
those pictures from NZ are just as rad as the ones from Samoa! were those mostly taken on the South Island?
I'll be in Samoa for two weeks prior to my trip to Samoa, it'll be in mid-June so I think it might be too cold to head to the South Island...do you have any recommendations of places to visit on the North Island?

Hey Bordo,

Cheers. Yeah - many of those pix are south island, but not all of them. And yes - it gets bloody cold down there in winter.

The problem with surfing North Island in winter is usually wind direction. If you get the chance, head down to Gisborne and Mahia regions (east coast, NI) for some quality winter waves. Of course, Raglan can handle some solid winter swells too.

You'll just have to keep a close eye on the forecasts and be ready to travel at a moment's notice if things start looking good.

I'll be in the southern island of NZ with a mate looking for waves tha whole way. Thinkin it might be a bit cold, but i can deal with it. eventually we'll head north to the area around the bay of plenty to see if any bills are chewing offshore, anyone have ideas for lodgings? friendly places where my mate and wont get got?

I recommend touring NZ in a campervan! I've just come back from an awesome surf trip around the North Island. Our campervan allowed us to change locations real easy. We could even park right on the beach a couple of times!! I've used the guys from http://www.procamper.co.nz to book our van. They are keen surfers too and gave us great adivce! Let me know when you come on your next NZ trip and I might join you. Cheers
