are there waves in auckland« on: February 09 2010 00:02:00 »
I'm moving to auckland to start working. As an addict of surf, I need to be able to surf on the regular. I heard there are waves an hours drive or so, but what about close by. What about after work and in the mornings. are there waves within a close range.?

Nope - about 40 minutes drive is the closest reliable beach to the Auckland CBD. All the west coast beaches (Piha, Muriwai, Bethells, etc) are between 40-60 mins drive.
Once a year Takapuna beach (10 minute drive from CBD) gets a tiny, pathetic, joke-worthy wave that's barely worth surfing. Otherwise your east coast options from the city are all more than 1 hour drive to the north.
