Yes, you can go surfing all the year, if you are hardy enough. The winter here was mostly sunny, although not that warm, but I always saw some surfers out there..

I learned to surf through a Dunedin winter - it ain't pretty but its possible. If you've got the gear the ice-cream head-aches and numb extremities won't get ya too much. Also, Summers often small, while the fury of the southern Ocean really lights up the points and beachies throughout the colder months.
Get a car; get the right gear; get out there.

The water temp aint shy of single figures there in winter and spring (June-Dec). Luckily theres a good chance of a high wave count in a short period so less sitting around. If you can ,buy your winter gear from a warmer country, should be less expensive.
