Nicaragua in February

I just got told on a short notice that I’m gonna have February off so naturally I’m scanning for surf destinations. I would concider myself a new intermediate surfer.

Anyone got any infos about the conditions in February in Nicaragua. I know it’s not the optimal time of the year but, is it possible to have fun an an intermediate?

RE: Nicaragua in February

I am surfing there right now.  Pangas drop is my go to.  I have heard good things about Popoyo, but have yet to surf there.  At this time of year the waves are pretty good for a beginner/intermediate (I have about 15-20 days surfing so far).  I would recommend a longer board over a shorter one.  There are definitely days where the surf is marginal.  Today was one of the better days.  Calm winds and 2-4ft waves.

If you are still learning everyday is a good day to surf, at least that's what I think, but sometimes the only waves to catch are breaking pretty close to shore.  It's a short ride and sometimes I'm bailing off the board in water that is knee high.

My two cents from an amateur.

Popoyo is a perfect place if you're after a variety of breaks within a walking distance. Further south past Mag Rock you've got a nice little left hander point break called Santana's that can offer some steep barrels on its day, with a heap of beachies along the way. Popoyo also is a cracker of a reefy, lefts and rights, respect the locals and they'll respect you - was there for three weeks in December.

Straight up: Maderas, Marsella and Popoyo are KILLER spots...however, this time of year, Maderas and Marsella are packed out. I was in Popoyo last week and there are plenty of places to stay on the beach (or walking distance to it). The swells are the same, if not better, but you don't have to deal with (literal) truckloads of "surfers" coming in by the dozens. Much more trill. For getting there, I recommend Neptune Transport Services; I've been using them for two years and they're on top of their game. Have fun, bud!
