I've spent my fair share of time in both places and from my experiences the crowd situation is nothing close to Costa Rica at this point. It is way less commercialized of a place, and although it is rapidly growing and more people are coming, I don't believe it will become as exploited as Costa Rica has. The most crowded day I've had in the water was at one of the more popular beachbreaks north of San Juan Del Sur. It was a weekend and everyone just kindof ended up at that spot...JJ's popoyo crew, Dale's crew, us (nicasurf international), as well as a handful of locals. I'd say there was probably 20-30 guys out at one point and I never felt like it was crowded. There's peaks up and down the beach and thus far most people have surfing etiquette. I have yet to have a problem in the water. Hope this reply helps.

nicaragua has become very crowded in the last two years.  dale, jj, and all the other tour operators saturate the two best breaks with boatloads of customers.  life would be better for everyone if they spread the wealth around but that does not happen.  multiple articles in the magazines have only made things worse.  look elsewhere in central america is you want to surf in your own group.  if you must go avoid the san juan del sur/salinas/popoyo area.

Mark is making it sound like Nicaragua is even more busy than costa. The thing you need to know about the SJDS region is that 90% of the breaks are accessible by boat ONLY. the few that you can drive to get busy, but NO WHERE near the numbers in costa. I have seen over a hundred people in the water at tamarindo, nosara, jaco, hermosa, etc........A busy day at popoyo or maderas is 20-25. with 5 or 6 tour boats around and 10 breaks, well you can do the math..

i wish the tour boats would spread out but i can promise you they don't.  i'll post a picture for you next time we go down. it looks like a marina out there.  i don't like to travel to the third world to surf with 25 of my not so close friends, especially when you have to wait ten minutes for a 4 wave set.  check out will's posting under "more breaks" -  i think he agrees with me.  too many people and too few spots.  last summer i watched about 20 board bags come off the plane.  i can assure you that was not the case two years ago.  i hope i'm wrong but i'll bet this summer will break the record.  personally, i don't mind because it only increases our property value.

mark-

you are a bitter dude, sell your land, explore, obviously you don't know all the breaks from what you are saying, and people that stay at jjs (wavehunters) can rarely surf well anyway.  i also own land here, love it, and don't mind dealing with all the people learning to surf since surfing is the trendy thing to do now.  as far as getting away, come on, there is a whole world out there, jj was in nica 7 years ago, paying his dues then, he took the risk, and now people are bashing him.  go surf, burn one, something.
