chancletas is chill, reasonably priced, everybody cool. nothing to do if no surf except drink and fish which costs more...but have gotten some of best barrels there! have fun.

Just got back from Chancletas. Great trip. Scored great waves. Two main spots in areas. 1) out front of hotel, tons of barrels and picks up lots of swell, 2) surf the point, 5 min boat ride to outside island, great left that peels forever. Also two or three other spots within minutes by car. Food was good, cheap, and great hospitality. Chancletas is definitely the best deal in Nica.

I stayed at Chancletas in July 08 and it's the best surf hotel in Nicaragua. Shay and his crew are the best. Clean rooms, great food, and great drinks too! Surf right in front of the hotel! Always breaks and barrels galore. I'm going back on May 1 to surf there and also Las Penitas.

I stayed at Joe's- 5-10 min away on a (free) bicycle. You spend roughly half the money on room and food so can stay twice as long. The food is better for sure. And it's right next to the boat for surfing the point and fishing. Best of all, you're not sitting on your ass staring at a bunch of primadonnas watching themselves surf on video on their laptops. Here you meet the real locals and practice your Spanish.Highly recommended.

Best place for someone on a budget (especially if there's 2-3 of you) is the Boom Cabin
Monthly rate is just $!0 a night for the whole cabin - that's $5 each if there's two of you. Basic cooking facilities there and you can walk to three beaches within 20 min including the famous Boom. Me and my buddy stayed a month, practiced a a lot of Spanish with the neighbors and got tuuubed. Good times!
