North Nicaragua???« on: May 08 2008 09:05:00 »
Hey global surfers,
So I am thinking of going to Central America, possibly for a long period of time, and was considering North Nicaragua, because well the waves look sick! However, It seems pretty desolate up their to be staying for a long time. and I was curious, are their any small towns? Other travelling surfers to share waves with? Or is it just the waves and beach kind of situation. I appreciate any help thanks

Northern Nicaragua is doable for a long stint, but you should pay a guide at first to get a good idea of the spots. The best that I know of is Nicolas with Surf Tours Nicaragua. Check their page out at www.surftoursnicaragua.com. He knows the north coast better than anyone, and does incredible tours.

Just across the border from Costa Rica remember, so plenty of options available for you. Check out www.coastroadproject.com for plenty of photos, surf travel info and advice, plus full stories from my Central American travels. Hope it helps. Good luck, you'll love Nicaragua.

nicarguasurfhotel.com. AKA Joe's place. Wicked place, Joe is an awesome guy. Crazy cheap and very clean secure, 10 min walk from a good beachy.
Don't stay at the cabin though. It's a shit hole and super far from the breaks, in the middle of no where. Just stay at the rooms at Joe's place and you'll be laughin.

I'm working with Surf Tours Nicaragua at the moment. It's not run by Nicolas anymore but a British guy called Alex, really nice guy. There are lots of spots in Northern Nicaragua but you're right in thinking its kind of isolated! Pretty much all the spots are off little fishing villages and there isn't much nightlife or anything thats for sure! Where we are they have fixed the road alot so now we can get into Leon in 40 mins. Leon has lots of sights, galleries, shops, restaurants and bars and you can also get there by bus from near our place so it's great for if you need to see some civilisation again!

I'd recommend the Puerto Sandino area for maximum access to a variety of breaks - we can walk to 4 from the house, have a fun little sheltered beach out back and have our own boat to access the rest including the rivermouth sandbar 'freight trains'
As for other surfers, there are a few camps dotted about and right now you can have empty line ups but as the big waves season picks up (April-September) there'll be a few more aorund, but not crowded by most people's standards. If you stay at a camp with a nice vibe you'll find chilled people to surf with and there's no aggro in
Hope that helps with your plans. If you're interested - www.surftoursnicaragua.com
