Good/safe/fun spot for advanced beginner in March« on: December 04 2010 12:12:00 »
Most of my friends who have surfed in Nicaragua are advanced surfers and boys, so I am reaching out to find out a suitable spot for me in March. I am an advanced beginner and a woman traveling solo. I am looking for waves and a camp/school suitable for my ability, and I want both safety and fun. Thanks!

Hi Diana,I'm working at a surf camp in Nicaragua. I had the same worries as you about the waves being too big and hollow and shallow rocks. There is alot of this but where our camp is based I've found plenty of manageable surf.
April is when the big swell hits here so in March there should still be places for you to surf. Out the back of our house we have a sheltered beach break which always has small, fun waves even on big swell. For smaller days there's a beautiful beach break we get to by boat and some closer breaks that are shallow and rocky on low tide, but safe enough for an advanced beginner at high tide.. they don't scare me and i'm a bit of a wimp!

Either way, the most important thing is to choose a location where the guides are knowledgeable and will take your abilities and concerns into consideration, and surf with you, pointing out any risks.
If you want to check out our place its La Flor surfcamp www.surftoursnicaragua.com We do a few discounts and offers so it's worth dropping us an email if you're on a tight budget and we can adjust packages to suit. Hope that helps!

There are great breaks up and down the coast, check out the following businesses to get a better idea of the central/northern area. These camps are just two hours from Managua Airport and offer full service accommodations.
