July surfing in Peru« on: April 04 2006 00:04:00 »
Anyone, I'm headed to Peru for about 5 weeks for the last week of June and all of July. I just have some general questions...I was thinking about renting a car and just cruising around...is that the best option? What areas are best for that time of year? Are there any great secluded areas where I can just settle a month of relaxing and surfing?

Here are two really good spots where you can settle if you want to stick to one area for a little while. Puerto Chicama and Pacasmayo. On strong SW swells, both these long lefts will completely blow your mind. Chicama is an extremely long fun wave that offers many distinct sections ranging from a fast racetrack wall to a top to bottom barrel on good days. There's also an awesome hostel across the street from the break... ~10USD/noche. Pacasmayo is a very powerful left too, worth your while if you can take it. It does get pretty windy at times though, not being sheltered from the strong winter southerly winds.

The are also a bunch of cool hostels/markets/bars and truely amazing people to make your stay really cool, trust me. Pretty cheap too. Both of them aren't secret spots or anything so you do have to put up with crowds... and show ultimate respect to the locals who put up with gringos like us... enjoy!

Rent a car?!?! no way man.... Not only that most of the best spots are relatively hard to find, but the drinving part in Peru is totally crazy chaotic. Plus, the highway patrol cops love to pull gringos over quite a lot (seriously), trying to get money from them... Not a pleasant experience! We hired this guy Alberto (email@example.com) and he took us to a bunch of sick spots for less than what we'd have paid for a rental. He's a great guy and knows how to surf really well. I'd suggest that you get in touch with him. Being Peruvian, he obviously knows a lot.

hey i'm also going to Peru for the month of July to surf with a buddy. I think the northern coast has the best weather at that time of the year. Does anymore know what the best surf spots are in July? Also, it'd be cool to rent out a place for the month... does anyone know how to go about doing that, or would like to room with us to lower the rent?

Hi. Almost everywhere in Peru has good waves at that time. Chicama, Pacasmayo and south of Lima are particularly good at that time. To rent a place, sometimes it’s a little hard for a month or two, you have to just go to the area you want and ask around. I’m going to be busy leading a group of surfers in the north for the first 2 weeks of July, I’m not working at the end of that month, so you can contact me if you need help or a guide.
I hope to see you soon and to surf some waves together or have some beers in the north.
