polluted water around Lima

I will be in Peru for 3 months or so starting in Aug.  My base of operations is going to be Lima.  Ideally I am going to be able to take a bunch of trips to hit up some solid surf down south.  My concern is the water around Lima.  People keep telling me its pretty nasty...anyone ever done any surfing there?  Any problems??
