Beginner Surfer going to the Philippines in May

« on: March 04 2006 12:03:00 »

Hey watsup I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on surf spots for beginners in the Philippines.  I am travelling there in May and I am staying on an island that is pretty close to Surigao.  I hear the surfing is good there, however I am a beginner and I don't want to throw myself into an expert's ocean.  Could anyone tell me if there would be spots that beginners can handle in Surigao?  It would really help me A LOT!!!  thanks!!!

if your a beginner, go to zambales or la union at that time of the year. you should be getting some southern & typhoon swells.... its actually great that time because it's not crowded & you still have your party at the beach speacially in la union. have a good one

Hey I just stumbled on this post, and me and a friend are heading to the Philippines in May to surf also. I have surfed some beginner beaches in Luzon and thats where I would recommend. Try Seabay resort in San Fernando, La Union, thats a good place to branch out and find some nice breaks. My friend tells me that there are beginner spots in Surigao and they are not seasonal, God bless.

Hi Lyn, no, I have never been to Samar to surf. Yeah I would really appreciate some info on where to stay and where the good spots are! Is it easy to get there from Bohol? I will be staying there while I am visiting the Visayas. thanks!

from bohol - cebu city - tacloban (by air) or by sea and land by supercat to ormoc then to tacloban. from tacloban take a minibus to guiuan, there are many jeepneys or tricycle to calicoan. sounds complicated but very enjoyable adventure. email me if u need any more info.

Hi natalie, may i ask where exactly are u going in the Philippines? Is it your first time? If u are staying in Luzon, Zambales or la Union would be close enough for you. If you are just in manila, it still worth taking a flight to tacloban then down to calicoan. I live in UK, email me @ magdalenaking@btinternet.com we could chat about anything on the Phils and surfing in particular.

Hi Isaac, Filipino ka ba? If its raw surfing u are after then u won't be disappointed with Calicoan. Its both for begginer and advanced and you can pay as much as you like and can be expensive too. If there's many of say 5 or more, I know of a place down the road that charges 75 dollars/day 10 persons max occupancy,
