Researching the number of surfers in the WORLD!!« on: January 28 2009 17:01:00 »
Anyone out there have any idea how we can get some data on how many surfers there are in the WORLD?
We're also looking to find out how many people are LEARNING to surf each year...
If you know any figures too that would be really helpful... We're writing a business plan for our investors to show them how big the surfing industry really is...

Googled and came up with this:
The International Surf Association estimates the impressive number of 17 million practitioners distributed in over 70 countries, and its industry moves around 2.5 million dollars per year.
Hmm, that last sentences has to be very wrong.

Ha yeah I think $2.5million is a little shy of the mark! I saw $11billion turnover mentioned in one site for 2006-7 and 17-27million surfers world wide. I'm just looking for confirmation or a site that is full of facts!
Thanks though! Maybe oneday soon someone will take it upon themselves to find out this highly important information!!!

Lets just say there are a lot of surfers out there. Its an industry that has exploded over the last 25 years. 20 years ago most surfers came from Australia, the US, Hawaii, England, S.A., N.Z. and a few other countries. Now there are surfers from all over Europe and Asia, even countries with no coastline. I think it would be impossible to even get an estimate on how many surfers there is. I had a surf school in oz for a long time and in janurary, I had sixty a day go through my school (and i was only small fry).

The boys in Sydney and the Goldie had 100's. That makes your researchvery complicated. Billabong alone is now a multi national company, turning over billions alone. Then you have 1,000's of s/board manufacturers and the accessory companies. Now China is in the picture, my god. Think about it. Mate, all I can say is good luck. You have the big job ahead of you

Just tell your investers that it's massive and growing all the time and there are so many socialites that want to be seen in the scene. Unfortunately surfing has become so trendy, people are into it for the wrong reasons, especially in countries where the surfing culture is new to them. All over the world there are people like this though. If you read this, you'll know who you are. Remember, LIFE'S TOO SHORT TO STAY ON A LONGBOARD. They should of stayed in the 60's.

Just a quick rebut to Darryl's comment that was not made in the Aloha spirit. It makes no difference why someone got into surfing as long as they fond the joy! It's all about having fun and connecting with the ocean, not about being agro and "ripping." Maybe you should try MMA or something, sounds like you might have some anger issues! I hope the whole world learns to surf...we would have a lot less problems. Although, crowded line-ups do kinda suck! (: Aloha!
