Peniche or Ericeira for beginners in October?

« on: September 19 2012 10:09:00 »

Hello, I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.  I'm hoping to go surfing for a week in October.  We are complete beginners.  I've read good things about Peniche and Ericeira but can't quite decide which looks best.  Does anyone have any tips or recommendations for first timers in this region? Cheers.

Hi Holly, Ericeira and Peniche are great surfing places but not all beaches are suitable for beginners. You should get more information with the locals to know which places are good for your level of surf. If you want a way to visit all the spots I suggest a camper van. Take a look at portugalbyvan.wordpress.com, it's the entire coastline at lowcost. Be free.
Cheers and nice stay in beautiful Portugal.

Hi Holly,

Ericeira and Peniche are among the best places to surf in Portugal, at least the most consistent in terms of swell and best hollow waves and barrels. It has also very good beach breaks more suitable for beginners.

For more advanced surfers and people looking for more surf than anything else, I would say Peniche is a good option. You still have very good restaurants and experience out there. Yet, Ericeira is also about going out and has that sexy surf culture that youngsters look for....it will depend on what you're looking for in the end

Hope this was helpful. You can check the surfcamps we operate in those areas here www.surfinn.travel/portugal
