Hi here is guenther from Austria as well. I have been several times in Portugal for surfing. Peniche is godd for surfing. you can rent the equipment for very good offers on the beach Baleal. The town of Peniche is very nice. BUT Baleal is boring!
I would go down to the south to Zavial an stay in Sagres. BUT it is easier to rent equipment in Peniche than in Sagres or Zavial.
PS i am planing to go also in may for a short surfing tripp to Portugal

You must have visited a different Peniche. Peniche is a fish stinking industrial shithole.
Baleal is pretty nice, some cool bars.

Lisbon coast should be what you are looking for, you can also try the south from Lisbon to Sagres, great beaches and nice waves. If you need info, I'll be glad to help you.

In the lisbon coast you have loads of options: Costa da Caparica, Carcavelos and the beaches around, Guincho, Praia Grande, etc. Altough I think the most consistent area, around that time of the year, will be Guincho and Praia Grande. Theres a surf camp near Praia Grande. If you need more info email me.
