Question about parking camper vans at airports car parks...« on: May 10 2006 07:05:00 »
I know Ill ring the airports too....
I am going to Spain/Portugal, Speptember time I have to fly back to the UK for two weeks but will leave my van in Portugal for that time in a secure airport car park so I can return to surf after that.
I was wondering, airport car parks are safe? Ive never used one in my life and will have ot leave my boards in them.

I wouldnt leave anything in a vehicle parked at an airport....especially long term. As soon a someone sees it's been there a while, they'll know you've left the country and either have away with your van or everything inside. I left my van at Barcelona Airport for a few weeks, and the security guards impounded it and wouldnt let me have it until I paid them cash. The place they had my van was full of foreign vehicles!! Total scam
What I've done in the past when I've left my my van in Spain is leave it on the campsite or at a campervan dealers.....most campsites and dealers have a secure area where people leave their caravans or campers.

Thanks for the advice,
I think Ill only be going back to the UK only for a few days now.
Heres another Spain story, A few years back-
the Guardia Civil, like to stop people who speed too, as I found out and got fined loads of money. It was kind of a trap but no excuses, when I stopped, the only other driver who was halted was another Brit with a surfboard on their roof!
I was taken to the nearest cash machine as I had no dosh, it didnt work then the next didnt I had to get escorted all the way to Tarifa, luckily it worked there. If not my hire car would have been impounded meaning more fines I should think.
So in other words dont speed in Spain!

A few more "DON'Ts".....
Dont free camp......even in large groups of vans. I've been broken into/ attempted to break in a few times while I was sleeping. I keep a big knife by my head.
Dont free camp because they're using knockout gas pumped in through an open vent and while you sleep, steal everything or your van! Pay for a campsite. I
reckon it's worth it
If some friendly "local" tells you there's a fire under the van or by the wheel..... DON'T get out of the van!! They wait til you jump out, hit you over the head and rob your van!
If you get knocked from behind, have a look at the driver of the car who did it ....if they seem to be genuine get out and deal with it....if there's a group of dodgy lookin geezers, carry on driving. They probably hit you on purpose to make you stop.

Sorry if this scares you, but I've travelled around Spain in a van for years and I've had most of these stunts attempted on me or told about by victims of these scams.
Just be carefull and never leave valuables on view in your van. I would invest in a safe and generally beef up security on your van if I was you. You can get a vehicle safe from screwfix dot com and check out the security section.

thanks for the info, nice site too, som good deals, im scared enough to buy things from it, do you run it by any chance?
Seriously, I do aim to free camp thats kind of bad about the danger of that. Where did all this bad stuff go on? All over?
Im going to Gallicia, then perhaps Costa De La Luz, trying to avoid all the hotspot major surf spots. I also need to leave my car in an airport for 3 days down there for a wedding....so I have to do that. My car number and credit card details are.....

Naaaah....I dont run Screwfix!! I just spend too much time there drooling over the powertools and cleaning products.
I think if you're spending most of your time in Galicia you should be OK with the free camping, but Southern Portugal and Costa de la Luz I'd definately park up in a campsite.
Generally speaking, a lot of the crime is on the mediterranean coast, and southern part of Spain. Dodgy Morrocans and Eastern Europeans picking on retired people who are travelling in their £40,000 luxury mobile homes, but also around the time of the bulls in Pamplona(mid july) there's a lot of van break-ins.
Just be careful and have a great trip!

ok thanks it should be good.
Ive got to take my laptop for work because ive got to but Im going to get a safe and steel cable and insure it.
One can get a bit paranoid though, sounds like youve had really bad experiences, its Spain not a third World country!
ive been to spain not had so many, but then I only had a hire car then.
I knew some Germans who had $700 Euros stole form their tent, in Tarifa, the robbers sliced open the tent and stole it....

I've been going to spain for 15 years, and lived out there quite a long time, so I suppose in a country where there is a lot of petty crime, it's bound to happen sooner or later. I was a trader at festivals and fiestas and illegally on the streets, so you see a lot of stuff; pickpockets, robberies but never anything violent, but apperently it's getting that way.
Foreign vehicles are easy targets!

Just to reply to your comment about Spain not being a third world country........It's not, but most of the perperators of these kind of crimes are from third world countries, so they really have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I love Spain and hope to buy a place on the North coast soon. It's sooooooo beautiful.
Here's another story....I met a bloke who was telling me about a couple he met. They picked up an English hitch-hiker and they all got on so well, he ended up trvelling with them for a few weeks. They were so comfortable with him and he gained their trust, so much, that one day they went for a swim and left him to guard the van.
