RE: Does anyone know where the most consistant breaks are?« Reply #1 on: January 14 2005 12:01:00 »
I am in portugal surfing now and am in Peniche, which is one of the most consistent spots around. It has several breaks on both the north side and the south side which gives you options according to the wind direction. Supertubes on the south side is one of the best beach breaks around, whilst the are two or three good beach breaks eg Baleal and a good left reef at Lagide on the north side. Another good area is Ericeira where there are numerous beach and point breaks in walking distance, or a short ride north.

ah cool, where would you recommend? all we need is some constant surf, we dont need anything worldclass or anything, and whats the water temp like? shorty, full suit, rash and boardies? cheers mate

Water temp in winter is about 14 celsuis, I get by with a good full 3'2 wetsuit, you still need a full 3´2 wettie year round- it is cold water year round (gets to about 18 celsuis?). Lagide is a very consistent left only on mid to high tide that is not too expert, but you need a ride from Peniche-about 6km. Beaches north and south of Peniche (Cerro, Alvoderra?) are walking distance, and you get good beach breaks. If the swell is huge Mohlo Leste right next to town jetty is a good righthander.
Township of Ericera has numerous beach breaks in walking distance, there is a softish right pointbreak called Furnas 5 minutes walk from the tourist office, but watch the rocks towards the end of the ride. Good luck

peniche, only because it has more variety and consistency with different winds. You will have to walk a bit further, but whats a 20 minute walk when you surf all day anyway.

Hope U still check out this forum, I know it's already quit old... Got the same problem, haven't got a car either, so Peniche sounds quite good to me :-) Now I would just like to know, if there is a campground or something? Or would it be possible to just camp at the beach? Don't have much money, and just want to surf anyway, so don't want to spend too much on accomodation, as that would mean I could stay shorter => less surfing! And is it possible to get to Peniche by bus (from Lissabon)? Do U know how much it is?
Thx a lot,
