water quality around Lisbon

« on: January 14 2007 14:01:00 »

I've heard that the water quality north of Lisbon (pehaps including around Cascai and Estoril) may not be the best for surfing and body boarding with children. Does anyone have any info on this, so sewage etc.  Does anyone know whether it's possible to get details of water quality as we can in the UK ?

Hi Liz, well there are a couple of beaches where the quality is not the best but nothing to worry about. Then there are some spots further north that have no problems with quality. As for where you can get the info I am not quite sure but if you need it I am sure I can find it for you! Take care

many thanks for your response. I've heard that there is an abbatoir which affects the water quality to the north side of Lisbon - is this true ? so is the water clean around Estoril and Cascais ?
Also, pls could you tell me whether the waves to the south of Lisbon are good - we're not surfers, just body boarders,  so is it safe for children and not too strong ? where would you recommend- they're aged 12 and 9 so not little.

check out defra.co.uk for UK water pollution. I found a link to beach pollution levels on the south coast somewhere. Cant find it again on  their site but it must be there. Good luck.

PS. Which area of Portugal is best to surf in April. Im coming for a month and am looking for some nice clean rollers. Any ideas?

Best spot around April will be the LIsbon coast as, cause its change over season, you get different swell all over but as there are many spots to choose from within 20 minutes, you will have always somewhere to go. My e-mail karineyre@hotmail.com if you need more details.
Have fun!
