Yacht Anchorages near surf spots

« on: May 12 2007 00:05:00 »

Hi. I will be sailing the Portuguese coast over June/July/August stopping to surf as much as possible where safe. If anybody has any good suggestions for some out of the way great surf spots and maybe co-ordinates, cool close Ports, cool anchorages, I would love to hear from you?
My Keel depth is 2.8 meters
Thanks. Dave

Sounds like a good plan. The following are all ports/harbours, going north to south. Viana do Castelo (surf Afife nearby - maybe the best summer wave in the country), Porto (obviously!), Aveiro (great seafood), Figueira da Foz, Sao Martinho do Porto (not much surf but a nice bay, and near Obidos which you should visit), Nazare (fishing port, very consistent spot north of the headland), Peniche (not much of a town but great waves and fish restaurants), Lisbon (over to you KS!)
South of Lisbon is where you'll find some of those "out-of-the-way great surf spots", especially reefs but I couldn't tell you exactly where they are! You could probably moor in Sines but it's a bit grim. Next decent sized harbour is Sagres, close to at least 5 spots on 2 different coasts.
I hope this helps!

Thanks for all all suggestions and sorry about the time to reply. Just setting up to leave in 10 days with butterflys for the summer surf. Been too long.
Will post again if I find any secret's undiscovered.
Cheers
Dave
